Fuel Queues in Lagos Again?
By Chimezie UcheAgbo
Long queues have returned across petrol stations in Lagos state and other parts of Nigeria for the second time in the year, 2022 due to fuel scarcity.
Motorists are having to spend up to 3 hours in queues in order to purchase the premium motor spirit PMS also known as fuel, while stations with shorter queues are selling at a pump price of N180 to N220, away from the official price of N165.
The scarcity is said to be caused by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) who say they can no longer sustain selling fuel at the official price of N165.
The Chairman, IPMAN, Lagos Satellite Depot, Mr Akin Akinrinade in a media briefing in Lagos said, members of the association have been operating at a loss since December 2021 following the present realities of inflation in Nigeria.
Mr Akinrinade stated that the current scarcity is a result of their members not being able to restock their products having operated at a loss for a long time.
He said the government fixed the pump price of fuel at N165 but following the present situation in the country, they can only retail at a minimum of N180 to be able to sustain their businesses.
He also pointed out the high cost of buying petrol at the depots saying that no marketer has lifted fuel from the NNPC depot at Ejigbo since December 2021, leaving them at the mercy of private depots.
According to Akinrade: “As I am talking to you today, no private depot is selling below N162 per litre. We still need to add the cost of transportation which is between N6 to N8 depending on the distance within Lagos and if it is outside Lagos, it is more than that and if you add the transportation cost to N162, it is already N170 and does not forget that this product is regulated by the federal government.
“We have not even added other charges at the depots and the running cost of our stations. Our members can no longer sell at N165 and in fact, there is no reasonable businessman that can sell below N180 per litre,” he lamented.
In the meantime, motorists are lamenting the present scarcity saying it is adding an additional layer to the current hardship in the country and for Lagos dwellers, it has added another layer to the long traffic situation in the state.
