Slum, a Place to Live: Yay or Nay?
Is the slum a good place to live? This question will be answered in different ways by different people depending on their experience and outlook to life. Slums in Lagos can be found in Ajegunle , Amukoko, Agege, Makoko( across the third main bridge), Ori ile, Sari Iganmu, Badia, Bariga, Ijeshatedo/Itire, Ilaje, Iwaya.
The slum is most times found in the urban or sub urban areas of a city where housing quality is low and living conditions are poor. The infrastructure in slums is often deteriorated or incomplete, and they are primarily inhabited by people from the lower economic profiles. But regardless of all these the slum has produced quite a number of talents in the world.
The slum might not be a good place to live but does it mean as individuals we leave it dirty and not good enough for cohabitation just because no one has made an attempt to make the place conducive for living?
These past few weeks I saw a lot of things my eyes couldn't phantom in the slum, the area was nothing to write home about, it was terrible. Now with this season that comes with rain, it is very difficult to walk freely on the road because the place is flooded and filled with dirty.
These above pictures are showing the struggle a typical individual who trying is to make end meets even when her shop is flooded with water, she decided to wear rain boots so she can sit in her shop and make sales. According to Mrs Ebun, that neighbourhood has not had electricity close to 6 (six ) months now which is making it hard for her to do business.
The first steps to make the slum conducive for living is to first educate the people of that community on what they are doing wrong and what they can do to get it right. Also, the government should make provisions to upgrade the slum even if it doesn't really change the poverty status of the people.
