The Lagos Waste Management Authority(LAWMA) is named in December 1991, formerly known as Lagos State Refuse Disposal Board (LSRDB) at inception was established in 1977. The MD/CEO of this agency is Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority is a parastatal of the government of lagos state responsible for managing waste generated in Lagos state through waste collection, transportation and disposal structure. The goal is to improve the environment with the impact of achieving positive and significant change in the living conditions regarding sanitation and health.
The Lagos state Waste Management Agency has given notice to landlords in some part of Lagos state on the 7th June, 2022 as to increase the tariff pay in order to be able to meet increasing operating costs.
The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Mr Ibrahim Odumboni said; "The high cost of diesel currently being experienced across the country, is severely hampering the waste evacuation Operations of the agency".
He also said; "The scarcity and high cost of diesel he been a major challenge as all service providers' trucks run on diesel"
Although the scarcity and high cost of diesel has been a major challenge as all service providers' trucks run on diesel, nevertheless, they are still doing the needful and leaving no stone unturned, to maintain and ensure a clean environment and prevent ill- health from the people.

Therefore, due to the high increase in the price of diesel, citizens have been pre-informed on the slight increase in their monthly waste bill with effect from July 1st, 2022 which is brought about reactions from the citizens.
"Not impressed by this excuses, even before diesel wahala, most landscapes and places in and around Lagos re riddled with debilitating filth consistently," Fashe Abayomi, a Lagos resident, said.
"This is affecting every business and LAWMA is doing well despite the challenges," another resident Wahab Adeyemi said.
For Sunday Akubor the situation isn't a welcomed development at all. "High cost of diesel??? Over the years from excuse to the other. NEPA increases tariff, Water Corporation increase tarrif, BRT, LAWMA, BANKS increases TARIFF," he said.
Ajani Adebayo echoed Mr Akubor's sentiments; "if every sectors are complaining of this Diesel, what can the poor masses do?" he said.
LAWMA services aside disposal of waste to the appropriate site is centered around education/awareness on good waste management practices to reduce, reuse and recycle waste and that is why the Lagos state Government,Babajide Sanwo-Olu launches a programme for cleaner Lagos called "Adopt-a-Bin" and through LAWMA distributes 40,000 waste bins to aid recycling.
They also run a LAWMA ACADEMY exploring internship program, Speciality Training, Organization Training and Summer school enabling them to partner with the Chartered Institution of Waste Management (CIWN) for the inclusion of certified courses in resource management in 2021, which resulted from the collaboration of LAWMA Academy and an environmental consulting firm in London UK, called SafeEnviro.
LAWMA services is very important as well as compulsory to all residents of Lagos State both private and public institutions as it saves the environment from the toxic effects of inorganic and biodegradable element present in our waste because mismanagement of waste can cause food, water and air contamination and soil erosion.
