Analysing the Lagos Owambe Party Guest
Owambe parties in Nigeria is not peculiar to Lagos State only. It is everywhere. A touch of party is in our DNA as Nigerians but for Lagosians, it is the most inexpensive way we unwind after a stressful work week.
It is our chance to have fun and get to meet new people because there is a saying that “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”.
Owambe is a lavish and flamboyant party thrown by Lagosians which is usually characterised by a show of lavish spending, paparazzi, luxury, lot of foods and drinks, music and dance and networking. The origin is Western Nigeria, particularly the Yoruba Culture.
It’s always a beautiful sight to behold. The atmosphere is colourful and filled with glamour. It is also always anticipated because of the glee, fun and pure bliss that comes with it, so don’t be surprised if you see someone throwing a party after buying a new phone.
Lagos parties can be such a buzz that brings a lot of people together, which brings about a lot of drama. You get to see a lot of things you would want to recall as old times memory to tell your grandchildren in the future. There are few things about Lagos Owambe that would keep you wondering and laughing uncontrollably, some of which are:
1: The Mogbo Mobranch guests: These category of guests are party crashers. Except you have a “strictly by invitation” rule and tight security at the entrance of the event, expect to see people like these whom you have never met in your life. This is like a highlight in Lagos parties. These Mogbo Mo’ya guests are the ones that will come with polythene nylon/ bagco bags to pack as much food and drinks as opportunity permits them. So when you hear of complains about insufficient food booking for the officially invited guests, don’t look too far. There are probably some uninvited guests at the party.
2: Fighting for food: This is a constant battle in Lagos parties, you will be shocked at how some prim and proper ladies/women are not proper when it comes to food, drink and souvenir matter, especially when they came with their kids. They will keep collecting and claiming that their child/children have not eaten or collected any take away pack at the event.
3: Over dressed guests: Some guests know how to out-dress the host/celebrant. And they do not care if this gets anyone angry. Even if they are broke, they can go as far as borrowing to attend an event looking good. They come to the party to stand out. They can even go as far as wearing a different dress code and picking their own material for the party. Some others just have a lot of accessories and make-up that you would think they are the celebrant or assistant celebrant.
4: Dance floor kings and queens: There are also some guests who come for the dance floor. Many people actually use Owambe parties in Lagos as get-away from work and typical Lagos stress, especially when music like “Buga won” or “Dance away your sorrow” is playing. Parties for Lagosians are like pouring ice cubes into a glass of drink-very refreshing and relaxing.
5: Friends of the celebrant: Mostly, the celebrants/host friends would hype the event beyond your ability, always shouting and putting their phone camera in the celebrant's face, capturing every moment. With them, there are no dull moments. We usually see them around the host to put and maintain the smiles on their face.
6: Single and searching: Single and searching guests doing partner hunt are also present in Lagos Owambe. They don’t necessarily attend the party to celebrate with the host, but for the motive of getting a relationship of their own started. A lot of times, you would meet some people at an owanbe party who have come from a very far distance even sometimes not knowing the host and when you ask why they have travelled all the way, they would probably smirk and reply you with “You don’t know where your prayers would receive answers”. You see them probably at the reception getting phone numbers of someone they saw on the dance floor, bridal’s train or those they talked to by chance.
You will agree with me that Lagos owambe is fun, amazing and exciting as it is also a way of easing stress tension accumulated over from work days on weekends. If you are also planning an event to be held in Lagos, expect to host these categories of guests at your party.
