There has been an uproar in Nigeria following the arrest of Nigeria’s former deputy senate president, senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife Nwanneka Ekweremadu by the police in the United Kingdom.
Senator Ekweremadu and his wife, Nwanneka were arrested
by the metropolitan police of the UK on allegations of conspiracy to
arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely
organ harvest.
The Ekweremadus have been remanded in police custody
following the denial of their bail application by a judge in Uxbridge
magistrate court.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the court
lacked jurisdiction to try the case and hence needs the consent of the attorney
general and the consent will take 14days.
To this end, the case was adjourned to 7th of July.
Meanwhile, mixed reactions trailed the news of the arrest with divided opinion from Nigerians on social media and people amking up theories about the situation.
However, a source close to the family who spoke on the condition of anonymity hinted Lagos Laif that Ekweremadu's daughter is sufferring kidney disease and needed a kidney transplant.
The source said a willing donor was found in Nigeria and taken to the UK but after medical examination, it was found that the organs of the donor did not match that of Ekweremadu's daughter.
As a result, the donor was to return to Nigeria but he refused and rather alerted the Metropolitan Police of the UK asking for asylum and leading to the arrest of the Ekweremadus.
In the meantime, some well known Nigerians have sent a message of consolation to the family during their 'trytin times'.
Labour party presidential candidate Peter Obi, tweeted:
Investigations are on going and the Ekweremadus are expected back in court at the Uxbridge Magistrate on the 7th of July.
