Lagos State inaugurate Anti-Okada Enforcement Squad

The Lagos State Government has officially inaugurated a 600-man Anti-Okoda enforcement squad to enforce order on the menace and activities of commercial motor-cyclist to enforce the ban of Okada across six Local Government Areas and nine Local Council Development Areas of the state.

The inauguration was held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, organized by the State Minister of Transportation, the certificate was presented by the Commissioner for Housing, Mr Fatai Akinderu during the ceremony.

The members of the squad had earlier undergone orientation and certification.

The squad is expected to join. The police force in enforcing the motorcyclist ban on all highways, major roads, bridges and across the six LGA where the ban affects the state.

At the inauguration ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Minister of Transport, Mr Kamar Olowoshogo urged the Anti-Okada Personnel to be diligent and honest in the discharge of their duties.

Dr Frederic Oladeinde Commissioner for Transportation urged the citizens of Lagos State to collaborate with the government in making this work. He also said in his speech that "it is the responsibility of the Public to report any nefarious activity of the squad to the Ministry of Transportation", emphasising that such reports will help the government generate feedback on strategies for the protection of lives and property.

 He stressed that the aim of setting up the squad is to ensure effective enforcement of the order on the Okada ban by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, therefore warning violaters (riders & passengers) of facing the full wrath of the law in line with the Section 46, Sub section 1,2&3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018.

Any motorcycle seen plying the highways, major roads, bridges across the six Local Government Areas where the ban affects in the state will be crushed in the public glare, the commissioner said. It was the untimely death of Sunday David Umoh, a 37 year old Sound Engineer in May, 2022, who was killed by Okada riders at Lekki, Admiralty way over #100 balance that led to the swift reaction of motorcyclist ban and the enforcement of Anti-Okada Squad in attempt to end the meannce of Okada in Lagos State.

In spite of the pleas from the Okada Union leaders for an extension of the commencement of the ban enforcement by the Lagos State Govenor who had earlier announced the planned ban in the affected LGA, it was still enforced as stated on June 1st, 2022.
